Provo • No Tyler Haws, no problem for the high-scoring BYU Cougars on Friday night in the first round of the College Basketball Experience Hall of Fame Classic.

With their leading scorer and All-America candidate sidelined with an lower abdominal strain, the Cougars scored more than 100 points in consecutive games for the first time since 1986 and routed Mount St. Mary's 108-76 in front of 16,481 fans at the Marriott Center. The Cougars improved to 3-0 with another cupcake coming into the building Saturday — winless Colorado Mesa — while the Mountaineers of Emmittsburg, Md., dropped to 0-3.

"After a big win [over Stanford] on Monday, the guys responded really well in kind of an uncertain situation with Tyler not going today," said BYU coach Dave Rose.

Haws, who suffered the injury in the 112-103 win over the Cardinal on Monday, despite scoring 31 points, will have an MRI Saturday morning and probably won't play Saturday night, Rose said.

About the only other concern for the coach during Friday's romp was free-throw shooting. The Cougars shot just 60.3 percent from the stripe, after shooting 65 percent in the win over Stanford.

"It's a concern," Rose acknowledged, but said the squad is full of good shooters and he believes the percentages will soar once guys get a dozen or so attempts under their belts. "… The first ones are a little nerve-wracking when you are changing from one level to the next" as seven newcomers are doing.

Starting in Haws' place at the shooting guard position, junior Anson Winder scored a career-high 22 points on 9-for-12 shooting and freshman Eric Mika also posted his best-ever scoring output, 20 points, going 9 of 10 from the field.

"I think we all knew coming in that we would have bigger roles tonight" with Haws not playing, Winder said.

Mika, who jammed his finger toward the end of the game and had his left hand wrapped up in the final minutes, attributed his big night to getting a lot of shots near the basket.

"A lot of my baskets were easy ones," Mika said.

That included the play of the game, a lob from Frank Bartley IV that Mika slammed home to give the Cougars a 101-65 advantage. Through three games against two quality opponents and a overmatched one, BYU is averaging 100.3 points per game.

"Coach wants us to score as many points as possible," Winder said.

And he was happy to oblige, with the Mountaineers trapping guard Matt Carlino consistently and forcing the lefty into a rough shooting night, 3 of 13. Carlino still had eight assists in 25 minutes and was one of six Cougars in double figures with 10 points.

"We all knew we would have to fill a couple gaps in the scoring," Mika said.

And Kyle Collinsworth filled the stat sheet, as is becoming his custom. He had 13 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.

"I thought Anson was so active, which was really great to see," Rose said. "He was always in the right spot. He got himself quite a few rebounds and got a chance to get going, hit a few threes."

Freshman Frank Barley IV added 16 points and junior college transfer Skyler Halford chipped in 15. Both were career highs. —
