BYU football coach Bronco Mendenhall's weekly radio show on KSL News Radio, which was broadcast on Tuesday night this week instead of tonight because of the Iowa State-BYU basketball game, seems to be getting cheesier and cheesier with each passing week. They had Miss Utah County on the show Tuesday night, for instance, and she asked Bronco what he does to make his wife, Holly, feel like a princess. Uggh. But Mendenhall dropped some pretty good information as it relates to future football scheduling for his independent program, including the hint that BYU could possibly play SEC-power LSU in the next few years. Asked by Greg Wrubell whether the Cougars will play more Big Ten opponents in the future, Mendenhall said "that would be my hope" and mentioned the scheduled games in 2015 at Nebraska (Sept. 5) and Michigan (Sept. 26). "Just after our game against Wisconsin and looking out, what Ohio State looks like, Northwestern, teams like that, that could be really fun," Mendenhall said. "Nebraska is on the schedule in the future, Michigan is on the schedule in the future, LSU possibly on the schedule in the future. So yeah, we're going to travel to as many places as we can to play the best teams we can." Even before BYU went independent, Mendenhall expressed his desire to play more military academies (the Cougars played Air Force yearly when they were in the Mountain West Conference) and Boston College, for some reason. Not sure why the coach seems fascinated with playing Boston College, but he is. It is probably the fact that BC is a faith-based (Jesuit) institution in a highly populated area of the country where a lot of members of the LDS Church reside. "I would still like to have a military academy [on the schedule] each year," Mendenhall said Tuesday night. "I would love for our players to visit West Point [home of Army]. I would love for them to visit Annapolis [home of Navy]. I would love for them to experience that part of college football. … I would love to have a long-term agreement with Boston College. I think that would be a great game for us. And there's many other that will be announced later that I think the fans will really like. There are some that make a lot of sense, and I would love to have games in each part of the country that have really natural and intriguing … similarities between programs." Back to LSU, Mendenhall didn't say anything else about playing Tigers, such as whether it would be just one game at a neutral site, a game at Baton Rouge, or a home-and-home deal or a two-for-one. All would seemingly be on the table. As you can see below, BYU's 2014 schedule already includes one game over the maximum allowed (12). I'm hearing that the Southern Miss game will be dropped, but nothing to that extent has been announced. But in 2015, the Cougars have two openings. For that matter, so does LSU.
