Provo • Freshman forward Eric Mika suffered a right eye abrasion during BYU's 90-88 loss to No. 21 Iowa State on Wednesday night, a school basketball spokesperson said Thursday afternoon.

Scans conducted on Mika's face came back negative, with no signs of broken bones or other damage. He will be re-evaluated Thursday night, and it is not clear yet whether he will be able to play in BYU's next game, which is Monday in Kansas City against Texas as part of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic at the Sprint Center.

Mika was poked in the eye by ISU guard DeAndre Kane with 3 minutes, 28 seconds remaining in the nonconference game. After referees reviewed the tape and determined the foul was "severe" and "extreme," Kane was assessed a flagrant 2 foul, which calls for immediate ejection.

Mika left the game having scored 17 points. He also had nine rebounds, including five on the offensive end of the floor.

BYU coach Dave Rose said Mika's absence in the final minutes "was a factor" in the outcome of the game.

"Eric did give us a real presence inside, scoring with the ball, but what he really did for us was offensive rebounds," Rose said. "He had five offensive rebounds. We missed quite a few short shots late that were around the rim that Eric probably could have helped us with."

Iowa State star Melvin Ejim, who had scored 21 points, made an obscene gesture to the BYU crowd after fouling out in the game's final minutes. BYU students, as they are wont to do after an opposing player is disqualified, chanted "left, right" with each Ejim step toward the bench.

"Definitely lost my composure today," Ejim noted on his Twitter account about 10 minutes after the game. "I apologize to the student section and Iowa State University. What I did was inexcusable and rude."
