A head-on collision Thursday afternoon in Sanpete County killed two people.

The accident happened at 4:38 p.m. on Highway 89 when a northbound Dodge Caravan collided with a southbound Chevrolet Silverado. The accident happened at mile marker 234, near Axtell.

According to the Utah Highway Patrol, the Caravan drifted off the right side of the road, tried to correct but ended up in the opposing traffic lanes. The collision knocked the Silverado off the road, where it rolled onto its side.

The accident killed Ken Stilson, 69, the driver of the Caravan, and Kathleen Stilson, 69, a passenger in the Caravan. Both victims are from Orangeville, UHP reports. The driver of the Silverado survived and was taken to the Gunnison Hospital.

The accident forced the closure of the highway between Centerfield and Salina.
