Army fires coach after loss to Navy
college football • Army fired coach Rich Ellerson on Sunday after five seasons at West Point and no victories against Navy. Ellerson was notified that he would not be retained about 24 hours after the Black Knights (3-9) finished the season with a 34-7 loss to Navy.
The 60-year-old Ellerson went 20-41 at the U.S. Military Academy and couldn't snap the Black Knights' losing streak against their most important rival. The Midshipmen have won 12 straight in the series.
• North Dakota State promoted defensive coordinator Chris Kleiman to head coach. The 46-year-old Kleiman replaces Craig Bohl, who is headed to Wyoming when NDSU finishes its quest toward a third straight Football Championship Subdivision title. The Bison defeated Coastal Carolina 48-14 Saturday in the FCS quarterfinals. They face New Hampshire in Friday's semifinal game at the Fargodome.
Stadium work blocked in Brazil
soccer • A labor court in Sao Paulo halted construction in part of the World Cup stadium where a man fell 115 feet to his death while working on a roofing structure in the jungle city of Manaus, further delaying the venue that will host United States vs. Portugal and three other matches next June. Work will only restart after constructors show that all safety measures are in place at the Arena Amazonia.
