An early Tuesday morning semi-trailer rollover closed down a ramp and three lanes near the northbound Interstate 15 and westbound I-80 interchange in South Salt Lake.
Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce said the big rig, hauling two tanker trailers of light crude oil, crashed about 1:45 a.m. near 2200 South, as it made the transition from I-80 to I-15.
"The driver apparently was distracted by [changing the channels on] his radio and hit the barrier wall. The rear trailer was detached by the collision," Royce said.
The semi and remaining trailer tipped and rolled onto their sides, but the driver escaped injury.
UHP said no oil leaked but the contents of both tankers had to be off-loaded to other tankers, a time-consuming process that kept the I-80 to I-15 northbound ramp and affected lanes closed until late Tuesday morning.
No citations were issued, but Royce said it was likely the semi driver would be ticketed for improper lane travel and failure to maintain a proper lookout.
