Fog and ice were factors in nearly half-a-dozen crashes on Salt Lake Valley freeways Tuesday morning, the Utah Highway Patrol said.
UHP Sgt. Todd Royce said the worst accident scene was the west Interstate 215 to I-80 interchange ramp, where four separate, single-vehicle crashes occurred on a slippery ramp between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. Two drivers suffered minor injuries, but traffic through the area had resumed by 9:30 a.m.
"The ramp was essentially frozen," Royce said. "We had people sliding off the ramp, but it's cleared now."
On I-15 northbound, near 2300 South, a 9:06 a.m. crash occurred when a car slammed into the back of a semi-rig flatbed trailer. The driver of the car was conscious and communicating when transported by ambulance to the hospital with serious injuries.
Royce said the road conditions in the I-15 crash were good, though what role patchy fog may have played there was uncertain.
