A 13th Utah bald eagle — this one a juvenile — has died as a result of a mysterious illness.

Officials said the bird died Saturday, bringing the total deaths to 13 in northern Utah in December alone.

The immature female, who was found by a hiker near Centerville and turned into the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Northern Utah last week, displayed the same head tremors and lower extremity paralysis as the previous birds.

Test results attempting to pinpoint the cause of deaths are not expected until after Christmas.

The birds have been found in West Weber, Corinne, Grantsville, Lehi and along the Provo River Trail in Utah County.

Wildlife officials ask people who spot distressed or dead eagles or other wildlife to contact local Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) offices with the location of the animal. The Help Stop Poaching Hotline — 1-800-662-3337 — is another option on weekends and holidays and after hours.
