The U.S. Cross Country Championships for skiing will be held Jan. 4-10 at Soldier Hollow in Midway, featuring some of the most promising athletes in the country.

However, top Olympians such as Kikkan Randall, Jesse Diggins, Andy Newell and Liz Stephen are not expected to compete because they're either racing at the Tour de Ski in Europe or training for the 2014 Sochi Olympics in Russia next month.

Athletes will race on four of the seven days of the event, with the other days reserved for rest and training.

Racing begins with the women's 10K classic at 10 a.m. Saturday, followed by the men's 15K classic. On Sunday, both men and women compete in freestyle sprint races that start at 10 a.m.

The men compete in a 30K mass free and the women a 20K mass free on Jan. 8, starting at 10 a.m., with both men and women finishing up with classic sprints starting at 10 a.m. on Jan. 10.
