Investigators have arrested a woman after an early morning fire in Hurricane left one person dead and destroyed a travel trailer that was being used as a residence.
The Hurricane City Fire Department received a call about a structure fire near 237 W. State Street at 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Upon arriving, firefighters found the travel trailer fully engulfed in flames, according to Sgt. Brandon Buell, public information officer. State Street was shut down while crews battled the blaze.
There were two people inside the travel trailer when the fire started, but one was able to get out.
After extinguishing the flames, firefighters entered the trailer and found a male deceased inside. Police are not yet releasing the name of the victim until the state medical examiner can identify him and his next of kin are notified.
"This is an unfortunate tragedy and our hearts go out to the family involved," Buell said.
While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, there were indications that an accelerant had been used, and investigators believe that a woman who had also been living in the trailer started the fire, according to a police news release.
Investigators arrested the 43-year-old woman and booked her into Washington County Jail under suspicion of aggravated arson. She was in a relationship with the man and was in the trailer at the time of the initial call, the news release adds.
