Here's what's being talked about in pop culture:

• Shia LaBeouf is still apologizing to author Daniel Clowes for plagiarizing the writer's work in a short film — most recently through skywriting. [The Hollywood Reporter]

• Actor James Avery — whose long career was highlighted by his years as Uncle Phil, the stern but loving parental figure on "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air" — died Dec. 31 at the age of 68. [CNN]

• Pioneering African-American actress Juanita Moore, who received an Oscar nomination for playing a maid whose daughter passed for white in Douglas Sirk's 1959 melodrama "Imitation of Life," died on Jan. 1. According to her grandson, she was 99. [Entertainment Weekly]
