A woman died after she was hit by a TRAX train north of the Ballpark stop on Monday afternoon.

The woman was walking near the train tracks about 4:30 p.m. near 200 W. Paxton Ave. (1180 South), when she lost her balance and fell in front of a train, according to Remi Barron, Utah Transit Authority spokesman. Less than an hour earlier, transit police had spotted her walking in the right-of-way near the tracks; she appeared intoxicated, Barron said. The officers took her to a voluntary detox facility, but she left and returned to the tracks, Barron said.

Witness reports indicate the fall likely was an accident.

"It's a sad situation," Barron said. "We just ask that people stay off the right of way — anywhere in the fences or behind the yellow line on platforms."

The woman's identity is known to officers, but they are not releasing any details until family members are notified, Barron said.
