The BYU men's volleyball team defeated Cal State Northridge 25-23, 25-22, 25-15 on Friday in Provo in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener.

Taylor Sander had 14 kills for the Cougars, Matt Underwood added 10 kills, and Tyler Heap tallied 37 assists.

Women's swimming

USC 119, Utah 91 • In Los Angeles, the Utes lost to fifth-ranked USC despite getting individual wins from Amanda Barrett in the 200 backstroke (2 minutes, 4.55 seconds), Selin Ozturk in the 500 free (5:05.86) and Stina Colleou in the 200 breast (2:17.02).

Skiing

In Big Sky, Mont., Utah's Kristiina Rove tied for third place in the women's giant slalom at the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association qualifier. Rove tied with New Mexico's Mateja Robnik in 2:31.

Denver's Kristine Gjelsten Haugen (1:59.64) won, followed by Montana State's Kelly McBroom (1:59.82). Utah's Chloe Margrethe Fausa (2:00.82) was fifth.
