A Farmington snowmobiler was recovering Sunday, a day after he was buried in an avalanche.

The Cache County Sheriff's Office said Matthew Morgan of Farmington was riding Saturday in a group of four about 13 miles north of Beaver Creek in Logan Canyon on the Idaho side when one rider triggered an avalanche in Snow Slide Canyon.

The avalanche, which was about 500 feet to 600 feet wide, buried Morgan under about 2 feet of snow.

The other riders in the group dug him out. He was initially unconscious but regained consciousness soon after, authorities said.

Two members of the Cache County Search and Rescue team, who happened to be nearby on their own recreational ride, started providing basic first aid and called for help.

Bad weather forced a medical helicopter to turn back, so members of the Cache County and Bear Lake Search and Rescue moved Morgan to Logan Canyon where an ambulance was waiting.

Authorities said Morgan suffered two broken femur bones, a broken arm and had a high risk of hypothermia.

The Utah Avalanche Center warned that there is a considerable risk of slides Monday in the Provo, Salt Lake and Ogden-area mountains. There is also a high risk in the Uintas and Logan-area mountains, as well as a moderate chance in the Moab ranges.
