Utah Highway Patrol troopers are investigating whether poor weather and slippery driving conditions were determining factors in a fatal collision of two semi-trailer rigs this weekend in Duchesne County.

Killed in the 4:30 a.m. Sunday accident in eastern Utah was 54-year-old Cody Smith of Fairview. Smith was eastbound on Highway 40, just southwest of Roosevelt, when the empty trailer of an oncoming semi veered into his lane and struck the driver's side of his rear axle.

Smith initially was rushed to a local hospital in very critical condition and then flown by medical helicopter to University Hospital in Salt Lake City, where he died later Sunday morning.

The driver of the second semi was not injured.

While weather may have been a factor, the accident and its official cause remained under investigation on Monday.
