Salt Lake City police are repeating their warning about warming up unattended cars: Don't do it.

About 7:20 a.m. Tuesday, near 1400 West American Avenue (1000 South), a man left his gray, 2005 Chevrolet Uplander running in his driveway. When he returned to the car, the owner was confronted by an armed man, who then drove off with the vehicle.

Citing the ongoing nature of the investigation, SLCPD Detective Rick Wall declined to identify what sort of weapon — firearm, knife, etc. — the man used to threaten the victim.

The suspect was described as a male Latino, 20 to 30 years old, 5-foot-10 to 6 feet. He was wearing a black beanie-style cap and a black hooded sweatshirt.

The stolen vehicle's license plate reads "C213FZ."

Police previously have warned that cold weather is a prime opportunity for car thieves, who troll neighborhoods in search of running, unattended vehicles.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call SLCPD at 801-799-3000.
