Sports briefs: Top Austrian skier Hannes Reichelt sidelined for Sochi

OlympIcs • Hannes Reichelt has been ruled out of the Olympics because of a back injury, leaving the Austrian Alpine speed team without its main medal hope in Sochi. The Austrian ski federation said Monday that Reichelt, 33, had to undergo surgery in Innsbruck for a herniated disk, only two days after winning a World Cup downhill in Kitzbuehel, and therefore has to end his season prematurely.

Besides his triumph in Kitzbuehel, Reichelt had four more podiums in World Cup speed events this season.

Conference honors Weber State's Berry

college basketball • Weber State senior guard Davion Berry has been named the Big Sky Conference player of the week. In conference wins last week over Idaho State, Montana State and Montana, Berry averaged 24.3 points, five assists and 4.3 rebounds.

San Francisco's ECHL team folds

HOCKEY • The San Francisco Bulls, an affiliate of the NHL's San Jose Sharks, have folded operations effective immediately. The Bulls said Monday that they failed to finalize a change in ownership that they hoped would sustain the ECHL organization established in October 2012. The Bulls finished their partial season 15-20-5 with 32 games remaining, including two against the Utah Grizzlies in San Francisco in March.

Pitcher Zambrano apologizes for fight

baseball • Former major league pitcher Carlos Zambrano apologized Monday in El Nacional newspaper for starting a brawl during Venezuela's winter series final. On Saturday night, Zambrano struck pitcher Mayckol Guiape of the rival Caribes de Anzoategui after teammate Ezequiel Carrera of the Navegantes del Magallanes was hit by a pitch. Zambrano asked forgiveness of Venezuelans and the Caribes organization for the "very embarrassing incident."
