The results of our structure survey are in, and the outcome clear: the Shilo Inn is the ugliest building in Salt Lake City.

The survey, posted late last month, asked Tribune readers to choose the ugliest of several large structures in downtown. A total of 4,493 people took survey.

The Shilo Inn took 31 percent of the vote. However, those who hate the Shilo's 70s Las Vegas kitsch aesthetics should rejoice; the building has a new owner and will undergo exterior upgrades soon.

Salt Lake City's new federal courthouse came in second place, with 24 percent of the vote, followed by the LDS Church Office, with 22 percent of the vote. In a distant fourth place, the Energy Solutions Arena nabbed 7 percent of the votes.

The survey also included a write-in option and while responses varied, the Ken Garff Building — formerly known as the First Security building — prompted a particularly strong response. Other buildings that showed up on the write-in lists included the Ruth's Chris building, the JC Penney Building and even the Salt Lake Temple.
