Three people were killed Sunday in a two-car traffic accident in Tooele County on State Road 36.

The three were not immediately identified. Four others were hospitalized in critical condition, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

About 3:17 p.m., a minivan was traveling north on S.R. 36 and tried to change lanes when it struck a small SUV in the other northbound lane near mile post 62. The collision sent the minivan across the median and into the southbound lane, where it struck a Subaru, according to UHP.

The driver and a passenger in the Subaru died, along with the front passenger in the minivan.

The crash also threw four young adults in the minivan onto the road. All four were critically injured and were flown or taken in an ambulance to surrounding hospitals in Salt Lake City and Tooele.

The State Bureau of Investigation is aiding UHP in investigating the crash.

The accident forced closure of the highway in both directions until 8:10 p.m.
