Mikaela Shiffrin is in excellent position to win the second U.S. gold medal in Alpine skiing and the eighth gold overall for the Park City-based U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association in the Games.Shiffrin skied the first run of Friday's women's slalom in 52.62 seconds, .49 seconds ahead of Germany's Maria Hoefl-Riesch. The lead is almost equivalent to Ted Ligety's first-run advantage in the longer giant slalom event that he won Wednesday. The second run begins at 9:15 a.m. MST. As the leader, Shiffin will ski 30th. Resi Stiegler, formerly of Park City, stands 20th after the first run and Salt Lake City resident Julia Ford is 30th.
