Unified Police on Tuesday afternoon arrested an armed and barricaded suspect in the Millcreek area.

The 38-year-old man and his 34-year-old girlfriend had been in a dispute earlier Tuesday when the man fired a shot from a handgun and they both left the home at 1075 E. 3740 South.

Police went looking for the man and eventually tracked him back to his house. When he refused to come out, police evacuated nearby homes and deployed irritant gas to prompt the man out of the house.

The man was under arrest by 4:40 p.m.

No one was injured, including the girlfriend, according to police.

After the man's arrest, police learned the man might have explosives inside the home, and a bomb squad searched the residence. No explosives were found and neighbors were allowed to return to their homes.

Nearby Millcreek Elementary School, at 3761 S. 1100 East, was locked down at about 2:30 p.m., said Granite School District director of communication Ben Horsley.

Horsely said police had asked school officials not to let students walk home.

Horsely said parents were notified to pick up their children, and that most students were picked up by their parents at 3:30 p.m., when school let out.
