The condition of a West Valley City man who was shot in the head during an alleged drug-related robbery was upgraded on Tuesday, and detectives expected to question him soon.
The 20-year-old victim, whose name is being withheld by police, had been in critical condition since the Sunday morning shooting inside his unit at the Overlook Point Apartments, 4640 S. 2970 West.
However, West Valley City police Sgt. Blair Barfuss said Tuesday that the man was out of danger and improved enough that he may talk with investigators as early as Wednesday.
Witnesses told police that the shooter had come to the apartment and then went into a bathroom with the victim. Witnesses heard arguing and then a gunshot. People confronted the shooter and managed to take the firearm after a struggle in which several more shots were fired without anyone being hit.
The shooter then fled the complex. An 18-year-old was tracked down and arrested Sunday afternoon. Police officers said that during questioning, the man admitted to taking the firearm with him to the apartment with the intention of robbing the victim.
He was remained in the Salt Lake County jail on Tuesday, booked on suspicion of first-degree felony counts of attempted homicide and aggravated robbery; second-degree felony counts of aggravated assault and obstruction of justice; third-degree felony discharge of a firearm; and class B misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
