A 12-year-old youth who ran away from the Youth Services Boys Group Home in South Salt Lake was safe and back in custody on Tuesday.

South Salt Lake police spokesman Gary Keller said a Missing Endangered Child alert had been issued after the boy was reported missing about 1 p.m. Monday from the facility at 177 W. Price Ave. (3610 South).

The boy called authorities at 11 p.m. Monday from a Wal-Mart in neighboring West Valley City to turn himself in. A police officer was dispatched to pick him up and return him to the group home.

The boy was uninjured but no further details on his whereabouts or activities during his absence were released.
