Masters: Utahn Mike Weir hopes for career revival

Sandy resident says he hasn't seen the results to match the progress he feels in his game.

Mike Weir is nearing the end of his full-time PGA Tour career, but he'll be eligible to play in the Masters as long as he likes as the tournament's 2003 champion.

And who knows? Maybe this week's return to Augusta National Golf Club will help him revive his career.

The Sandy resident and former BYU golfer, who will turn 44 in May, is playing the 2013-14 PGA Tour season via his last exemption as a top-25 career money-winner. He would have to do something spectacular in the next four months to retain full access for next season.

Weir has made the 36-hole cut in only four of 14 events this season — and once in this calendar year, tying for 56th place in the recent Valero Texas Open. He has earned less than $50,000 in 2013-14, barely adding to his $27 million career total.

"Right now, my game is feeling pretty good," Weir said this week on his website. "I know that may sound strange considering my results of late, but I feel I'm hitting it well but just not able to score. It seems that every round I'll have one three-putt or one bad tee shot that throws things off, and if I can eliminate those and play some steady golf, I should be able to start scoring. I really feel as though all parts of my game are coming together."

After missing the cut in the Masters in 2004 as the defending champion, Weir played all four rounds in each of the next six tournaments. But he's missed the cut three years in a row, shooting 72-79 last April.

Weir will play the first two rounds of the 2014 event with Matt Every and Roberto Castro, teeing off Thursday at 7:02 a.m. MDT.
