COLLEGE FOOTBALL • The UNLV Rebels will not be eligible for the Mountain West championship game or a bowl berth in 2014 after failing to reach the minimum Academic Progress Rate score. The NCAA sanctions include no postseason competition, replacing four hours of practice time with four hours of academics weekly and having five days of football-related activities a week instead of six. Teams need an average four-year APR score of 930 out of 1,000. UNLV's average was 925.
• Running back Aaron Baltazar has transferred from Boise State to Washington State. Baltazar, who rushed for 235 yards as a freshman last season before a knee injury ended his year, will sit out 2014 per NCAA transfer rules.
Ski team hires speed coach for U.S. women
SKIING • The Park City-based U.S. ski team has brought in Stefan Abplanalp to take over as the women's speed coach. The Swiss-born coach spent the last two seasons with Norway's women. Before that, he was with the Swiss squad for eight seasons. Abplanalp replaces Chip White, who left last month after 18 years and helping develop skiers such as Lindsey Vonn and Julia Mancuso. Abplanalp is in Park City working with the staff to develop a detailed training schedule for next season.
Tarkanian in hospital
College basketball • Former UNLV basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian was admitted to a Las Vegas hospital Wednesday night after relatives say he was feeling weak and having trouble breathing. Tarkanian, 83, remained sedated at the hospital Thursday while doctors worked on diagnosing his ailment.
