A Salt Lake County jail officer was briefly hospitalized Monday after an inmate attacked him.
Jail officials said Tuesday that a 25-year-old inmate became upset because his phone call ended, and attacked the officer who was escorting him to his cell around 1 p.m. Monday.
"As the officer was directing the prisoner to his cell, the prisoner turned on the officer and began assaulting him," a jail press release reads.
Back-up officers arrived and restrained the inmate, who was checked by medical staff then placed in a cell alone.
The officer who was assaulted was taken to a local hospital where he received stitches to his eye. He was released Monday in good condition.
The inmate will now face assault by a prisoner charges, according to officials.
He has been held in the jail since December on suspicion of aggravated kidnapping, disorderly conduct, driver's license violation, aggravated burglary, robbery and public intoxication.
Jail officials noted that they do not believe the assault had any connection to the shooting that occurred at the federal courthouse in Salt Lake City earlier that morning.
The jail was on lockdown Monday, as part of standard procedure after a jail staffer is assaulted, but that lockdown was lifted Tuesday morning.
