A Naples Police officer was injured Saturday night when a prisoner attacked him in an attempt to gain control of his weapon, according to Vernal Police.

The officer, who was not immediately identified, suffered minor injuries.

Law enforcement from several agencies responded to Ashley Regional Medical Center late Saturday in response to a call reporting shots fired, according to a news release.

Upon their arrival, investigators learned a prisoner, who had been transported to the hospital after his arrest on unrelated crimes by Naples Police, had tried to disarm a police officer, the release said.

The prisoner was not named, but he was "quickly subdued and the scene was secured," officials said.

He was not injured in the altercation.

An investigation continued overnight.
