A hostage situation that shut down Interstate 15 for hours Sunday was resolved peacefully, authorities said.

A suspect allegedly held a young child hostage, barricaded himself in a vehicle on I-15 and forced police to shut down the highway in both directions sometime before 2 p.m. By about 5:35 p.m., the Utah Department of Public Safety tweeted that the suspect had been taken peacefully into custody and the child was safe.

It all started about noon Sunday, when Cedar City dispatchers were advised of two people wanted out of Louisiana. About 40 minutes later, officers located a vehicle with people inside who matched their descriptions and stopped the vehicle on I-15 near mile post 77.

Two people got out and were taken into custody, but a third person took off in the vehicle with a young boy, leading police on a chase with speeds reaching 130 mph, according to a news release from the Iron County Sheriff's Office.

After 18 miles, police spiked the vehicle's tires and it came to a stop after striking another vehicle. Police believe the people inside the struck vehicle were not hurt, according to the release.

The Iron County Sheriff's SWAT team and the Iron Metro SWAT team responded to the scene, to negotiate with the suspect, the release said.

In a tweet sent out shortly before 2 p.m., the Utah Highway Patrol reported that it too had responded to the standoff.

The northbound lanes were closed at State Route 20, and the southbound lanes were shut at exit 112, according to the Utah Department of Transportation. UDOT advised motorists to avoid the area and postpone travel if possible during the standoff.
