While Tooele is a Utah softball power and Stansbury is back to defend its title, much of the intrigue going into the Class 3A softball tournament involves region champions Cedar City, Uintah and Payson, who have never won a title.

The tournament gets underway Saturday on the home fields of the four region champions before moving to the Spanish Fork Softball Complex on Thursday through May 17 where the championship will be decided.

Region 11 winner Tooele is no stranger to state softball competition. The Buffs have won nine titles, the last coming in 2010 when they were a 4A school.

But Cedar City, Uintah and Payson have never won. They all captured their region titles and thus earned the right to host first-round games.

Payson hosts Region 9's Dixie, Cedar takes on Region 12's Carbon, Uintah hosts Region 11's Bear River and Tooele takes on Region 10's Morgan.

The double-elimination tournament format sees eight first-round games Saturday with losers of those games playing another game Saturday before the event moves to Spanish Fork. —
