An Ogden man accidentally shot his father in the leg early Tuesday in a home in Ogden Canyon.

The man, 21, had been shooting the gun in the canyon Tuesday evening before meeting his father at a home the father managed.

"There was a discussion about the son cleaning the gun and putting it away," said Weber Canyon sheriff's Sgt. Lane Findlay.

The son removed the magazine and thought the gun was unloaded as he sat down on the couch, Findlay said. As he sat down, his finger hit the trigger and the gun fired a bullet that struck the father in the leg, Findlay said. The bullet shattered the victim's femur and lodged in a joint, Findlay said.

Investigators determined the shooting was an accident. The father had undergone surgery on Tuesday and was expected to survive.

"Make sure you treat every weapon as though it were loaded," Findlay said. 'Look and feel to make sure there's not a round still in the chamber."
