Ogden police have identified the victim of a weekend auto-pedestrian fatal accident as a 48-year-old grandmother.

Police Lt. Chad Ledford said Monday that Leona Cole, of Ogden, and her 8-year-old granddaughter were walking eastbound across Harrisville Road, at 164 North, about 9 p.m. Saturday when Cole was hit by an SUV.

Police said witnesses reported seeing Cole stopped in the roadway, apparently trying to retrieve a sandal, shortly before the northbound vehicle hit her.

Cole was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The child escaped with minor injuries.

The 68-year-old driver told investigators he did not see the woman or the girl until it was too late.

The incident remained under investigation.
