Draper • Police are investigating the apparent suicide of an inmate at the Utah State Prison in Draper on Sunday.

Utah Department of Corrections spokeswoman Brooke Adams says 42-year-old John Douglas Mangum was found in his cell around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Investigators believe Mangum committed suicide but the Unified Police Department is conducting a standard investigation.

Adams says Mangum was found unresponsive in his cell and pronounced dead after infirmary staff and fire crews responded.

Additional details were not released.

Mangum had been behind bars since September 2013 for a parole violation. He had previously been on probation for felony assault.

He was scheduled to be released in September.
