A late Tuesday night police chase ended with the arrest of a violent fugitive and his girlfriend after a brief standoff at a West Valley City home.

Public safety dispatchers said WVCPD officers began pursuit after they unsuccessfully attempted to pull over the suspect, wanted on an arrest warrant stemming from an aggravated assault charge, about 10:30 p.m. near 3600 South and 2200 West.

Police said speeds reached 70 mph as the chase wound through residential streets until the 30-year-old suspect and his 32-year-old girlfriend stopped, bailed out and attempted to take refuge in the home of some acquaintances.

Officers surrounded the home, and the suspect soon came out and surrendered. Police also arrested the girlfriend.

Both were booked into Salt Lake County Jail, where they remained on Wednesday without bail pending charges likely to include fleeing police and obstruction of justice.
