Northern Utah law enforcement agencies were looking Monday for a Roy man suspected of fatally stabbing his estranged wife and then fleeing into the night.

Layton police Lt. Jason Hinojosa said Joseph Castillo, 45, allegedly stabbed his wife multiple times in the garage of a home near 3200 West and 1000 North in Layton, about 11 p.m. Sunday. He was last seen running from the scene north toward neighboring Clearfield.

The victim, 36 year-old Kaye Lynn Spackman, was rushed to Davis Hospital and Medical Center, where she died a short time later.

Castillo is described as a 5-foot-2 Latino, 140 pounds, wearing a sleeveless green shirt and khaki shorts. Hinojosa said he also may have a cut on his forehead.

Hinojosa said Layton police have alerted other northern Utah police agencies, who are assisting in the search for the suspect. A warrant for Castillo's arrest, alleging first-degree murder, also was issued Monday.

Layton police say Castillo and Spackman had recently broken up after more than 20 years of marriage.

The fatal altercation was witnessed by the couple's 17-year-old son; two other children, daughters ages 8 and 4, were asleep at the time of the incident.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Castillo is asked to call Layton police at 801-497-8300.
