An Illinois man fell to his death Wednesday near Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort.

William Pierce, 64, came to the Salt Lake City area for a business meeting earlier this week. On Wednesday, the day before the meeting, he went for a hike from the resort and, at 7:44 p.m., sent a picture of where he was to his wife, said Unified Police Detective Ken Hansen.

"That was the last anybody had heard from him," Hansen said.

After Pierce failed to make the meeting Thursday or his return flight, his family in a suburb of Chicago called police. Unified police heard about his disappearance about 9:30 a.m. Friday, Hansen said.

They found Pierce's rental car in the Snowbird parking lot, and with the help of a Department of Public Safety helicopter, search and rescue teams found his body later that day. He had fallen about 300 feet, Hansen said.

By about 10 p.m. Friday, crews had recovering Pierce's body from the mountain.
