Though a new wildfire flared up in Utah County Saturday, most of the state's larger blazes are winding down.
Saturday morning fireworks started the Spring Canyon Fire, which reached 140 acres as it retreated up the canyon near Springville. Crews contained 15 percent of the fire, burning in grass and oak brush, by Saturday evening.
Firefighters also spent Saturday wrangling the Rockport Fire, which began in a yurt near the Summit County neighborhood of Rockport Estates Friday afternoon. The fire spread toward a nearby landfill, growing to about 120 acres. Firefighters reached 95 percent containment by Saturday evening, and expected to return and check for hot spots on Sunday, said Tyler Rowser, spokesman for the North Summit Fire District.
Why the fire started in the yurt is still under investigation.
Further south, the human-caused Levan Fire has burned up more than 3,000 acres south of the Juab County town of the same name. The more than 180 firefighters on hand had the flames 5 percent contained Saturday evening.
Meanwhile, the lightning-sparked Black Fire in south Tooele County had spread to 670 acres by Saturday evening with 80 percent containment.
The 1,140-acre lightning-sparked Anaconda Fire, northeast of Tooele, and the 4,150-acre Simpson Complex Fire near Vernon are both 95 percent contained. The former has been turned over to local firefighters, and crews expected the latter — which comprises both the Sheep Fire and the Lion Peak Fire — would be completely contained this weekend.
The 1,400-acre Tunnel Hollow Fire, ignited by lightning about 5 miles east of Morgan, was still burning along the Weber River corridor and Interstate 84. Fire officials lifted the Weber River closure on Saturday and expected full containment by Monday.
Firefighters were also fighting the 188-acre Plateau Fire smoldering 5 miles east of Salina. The fire was at zero percent containment Thursday evening. No structures were threatened.
