A woman was left on her own Sunday to help her injured dog off stormy Mount Timpanogos.

The woman and her dog, which was reportedly attacked by a mountain goat, were near the Robert's Horn area of the mountain, said Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon. The woman's mother — who lives in Reno, Nev. — called for help on her behalf about 5:16 p.m., but the county sheriff's office is not sending a rescue team to help the 26-year-old and her dog down the mountain.

"We're kind of in a tight situation," Cannon said, explaining that they have to keep their resources available to save people and cannot tie up their crews with an animal rescue, especially if it were to became protracted. "She's unfortunately on her own."

Under normal circumstances, it would take the woman — who is an experienced hiker — about 2 hours to hike back from where she is, Cannon said. But her injured dog is 55 pounds.

Storms have also been moving through the area, and were forecasted to likely bring heavy rainfall, according to the National Weather Service.

Cannon did not know the nature of the dog's injuries.

The sergeant added that he has never heard of a mountain goat attack on the mountain.
