Here's what's being talked about in pop culture:

• The reports that Japan's Studio Ghibli, the makers of such animated classics as "My Neighbor Totoro" and "Spirited Away," will stop production may be a bit premature. A closer translation of the announcement by the studio's manager, Toshio Suzuki, reveals the closure could be just a pause. [Kotaku Australia]

• Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" shattered the record for an August opening weekend, taking in $94 million. [Box Office Mojo]

• Australian-born singer Michael Johns, who competed on "American Idol" in season 7 (the same year Utah's David Archuleta was on the show), died of a blood clot in his ankle. He was 35. [Entertainment Weekly]
