Kansas City, Mo. • Jamaal Charles made it through every hit from Derrick Johnson, every shot from Eric Berry and every tackle from the rest of the Chiefs' defense during three weeks at Missouri Western.

It wasn't until he was leaving their training camp home that he got hurt.

Charles was in the process of moving out of the dorms on Thursday, when the team was getting ready to shift the rest of camp to their own practice facility, when he came to a grassy slope. He wound up slipping just a bit and turned his foot just enough to set alarm bells ringing.

X-rays and MRI exams ensued, and Charles did not make the trip to Carolina for Sunday night's preseason game against the Panthers. And while all the tests came back negative, coach Andy Reid said Monday that he's unsure just how long the explosive running back will be out.

"He's feeling better today. We're optimistic about it," Reid said. "Initially there was a little concern, but he had all stuff done to it and everything is clear."

Reid did not say whether Charles will practice this week, or whether he'll be available when the Chiefs welcome the Packers for their third preseason game Saturday night.

Cleveland QBs struggle in loss

Johnny Manziel struggled to hit open receivers and added another gesture to his repertoire — a middle finger apparently aimed at the opponents' bench — in the Cleveland Browns' 24-23 loss to Washington on Monday night in Landover, Md.

Neither Manziel nor Brian Hoyer did much to claim the Browns' starting quarterback job.

Manziel, the No. 22 overall pick in the draft, completed 7 of 16 passes for 65 yards and a touchdown. Hoyer went 2 for 6 for 16 yards. Both players' stats were padded by series against Washington's backups.

Patriots • Rob Gronkowski is participating in contact drills with the New England Patriots for the first time since his knee surgery. The star tight end says he's planning to be ready for the season opener on Sept. 7 against the Miami Dolphins.

Cardinals • Darnell Dockett, among the most durable players in the NFL over the past decade, was carted off the field with an injured right knee after Arizona began its final week of training camp Monday. The 6-foot-4, 290-pound defensive tackle was injured in an 11-on-11 drill. —
