Here's what's happening today in pop culture:

• A shoplifting suspect in jail for the last month told Beverly Hills police that he was Scott Weiland, the former lead singer of Stone Temple Pilots — and both the cops and TMZ believed it, until Weiland posted a video proving he wasn't in jail. [Us magazine]

• New York's Metropolitan Opera has reached tentative contract agreements with all of its 15 labor unions, averting a lockout just one month before the new season opens. [The Hollywood Reporter]

• David Yates, who directed the last four "Harry Potter" movies, is returning to the Potter-verse to direct the first movie in the spin-off trilogy "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them." [Variety]
