Here's what's happening today in pop culture:

• Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" won Video of the Year at the MTV Video Music Awards — and Cyrus brought a teen runaway up during her acceptance speech to call attention to youth homelessness. The other big highlight of the night: Beyonce's show-stopping performance. [The Hollywood Reporter, The Guardian]

• "Guardians of the Galaxy" reclaimed the top spot at the box office this weekend, as well as overtaking "Transformers: Age of Extinction" as the biggest-grossing movie of the summer. On the other side, "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For," bombed. [Box Office Mojo]

• Sir Richard Attenborough, the acclaimed actor and director, died Sunday at the age of 90. Onscreen, he starred in "Brighton Rock," "The Great Escape" and "Jurassic Park." As a director, he won the Oscar for "Gandhi," and also made "A Bridge Too Far," "Magic," "Cry Freedom," "A Chorus Line," "Chaplin" and "Shadowlands." [BBC News]
