Posted: 2:16 PM- Kevin Colley will be the Utah Grizzlies' new head coach. He will take over for Jason Christie, who recently announced he will take a job as an assistant coach for the AHL's reigning Calder Cup Champion Chicago Wolves.
Colley played for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and had a brief stint in the NHL with the New York Islanders before coming to Utah for his first year as a coach. He was an assistant with the Grizzlies last season.
Though he will be heading into just his second season as a coach, he knows the ECHL well. He earned playoff MVP honors while helping ECHL'S Atlantic City win a Kelly Cup Championship in 2003. He was also an all-star in 2002 and 2003.
He was awarded the Bob Nystrom Award - an honor given to the player who best exemplifies leadership, hustle and dedication. He retired as a player Feb. 24, 2006.
Colley will be inheriting a team that is coming off a conference finals appearance, the Grizzlies' best season in over a decade.
Colley, who at 29 will be one of the youngest coaches in the ECHL, will make his head coaching debut Oct. 18 at Idaho.
A news conference to announce the new coach will be held at the E Center on Thursday at 1 p.m.
