Police arrested a Salt Lake City man accused of trying to attack a group of people with a sword Tuesday.
Several people were at a house on the 1000 South block of Pueblo Street (1440 West), said Salt Lake City police Detective Dennis McGowan.
A fight started about 12:30 p.m., when the 40-year-old man and his girlfriend were asked to leave because they were smoking methamphetamine, according to a jail booking statement. He left the house and grabbed a large, blunt sword from a neighbor's garden, McGowan said. Swinging the sword, he allegedly confronted the group and threatened to kill them.
People took cover to protect themselves, and the homeowner's brother called 911. No one was hurt. Officers found the roommate and his girlfriend at a store a few blocks away and the sword in the backyard.
After initially denying possession of the sword, the man told police he had it "but only to protect himself," according to the booking statement. It was not immediately clear why the sword was in the neighbor's garden.
