The family of a slain Millard County deputy is mourning for the second time in less than four months after 40-year-old Ryan Greathouse was found dead in Las Vegas.
Greathouse is the brother of Josie Greathouse Fox, who was shot to death in January after she made a traffic stop near Delta.
Greathouse was found at 1:15 p.m. Thursday in an apartment bedroom. Toxicology results are pending, and determining how Greathouse died could take several weeks, according to the Clark County Coroner's Office.
Greathouse's family was too distraught to discuss his death when contacted by The Salt Lake Tribune .
Bill Cassell, a spokesman with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, declined to discuss any details of Greathouse's death.
He was a potential key witness in the case against Roberto Miramontes Roman, who is charged with capital murder in Fox's shooting. It isn't clear how his death could affect the case.
On Jan. 5, a Millard County sheriff's sergeant saw Greathouse's vehicle meet with Roman's on a dirt road about midnight. Deputies were looking for suspicious activity after a string of burglaries in the Delta area.
After the vehicles split off, the sergeant told Fox to stop a gray Cadillac DeVille headed toward Delta. The sergeant, meanwhile, followed Greathouse's vehicle in a different direction.
Fox pulled the Cadillac over and read the car's license plate over the radio. About 10 minutes later, the sergeant came to back up Fox and found her dead, shot above her protective vest.
Police returned to where the sergeant had followed Greathouse and asked him about the other vehicle. He admitted he had bought drugs from Roman and gave officers Roman's phone number, according to police.
After a daylong manhunt, Roman was found the next morning hiding in a shed in Beaver County along with 36-year-old Ruben Chavez Reyes.
Greathouse was not charged with a crime in connection with the drug buy. He had previously been convicted of a misdemeanor drug charge in 1994 and again in 2004, according to court documents.
Cassell said he did not believe Greathouse had been arrested in Las Vegas.
Roman's attorney, Steve McCaughey, had no comment on how Greathouse's death could affect Roman's case.
