The death of an inmate at eastern Utah's Duchesne County Jail is being investigated as an apparent suicide.
Duchesne County sheriff's spokesman Jeremy Curry said Michael Allen Baker, 60 of Duchesne, was found unconscious and unresponsive by jail staff in the facility's shower area about 9:40 a.m. Tuesday. Attempts to revive him failed and he was later declared dead at the Uintah Basin Medical Center.
The shower area is located in the jail's general population unit.
Noting that the investigation was ongoing, Curry did not specify the apparent means of suicide, other than to indicate it appeared self-inflicted.
Baker, a registered sex offender, was awaiting sentencing on felony convictions on charges of forcible sexual abuse and lewdness involving a child. He had been found guilty by a jury on Sept. 16.
Detectives on The Tri-County Critical Incident Team are investigating the death.
