Kaysville • Davis coach Soulyvahn Phongsavath admitted senior midfielder Lindsay DiReda wasn't supposed to be in the game on that corner kick. But after DiReda directed the ball into the back of the net to break a deadlock with Weber in the 39th minute Thursday, the coach was glad she was.

"I don't know why she was there in the first place, but I'm really glad she was there," Phongsavath said. "That was one of the best goals I've ever seen. The pace the ball had and the pace she generated off of that to go in was unstoppable."

The Darts went on to win their record 42nd straight game with a 2-0 score over Weber in a rematch of the 2015 5A championship game, advancing to the semifinals of this year's playoffs.

Davis looked the part of a team that had won 41 straight coming into the game, playing French Montana's "Ain't Worried About Nothin" on the field speakers as the players warmed up.

But as the opening whistle signaled, Davis found itself nervous and discordant to start off — missing on passes in the final third and making mental mistakes the Darts usually avoid better than any team in the state.

"I think both teams came out really hard, really intense," Phongsavath said. "There wasn't really a flow to the game, and that goal definitely helped calm us down for the second half."

The goal propelled the team into the second half with more confidence and energy, as Davis midfielder Mikayla Colohan nearly added a second goal in the 48th minute with a thunderous shot that ricocheted off the left post.

Weber had its chances, but settled for tough angles and long shots for most of the game, including a shot in the 73rd minute by Hannah Hillstrom that nearly caught the Darts' goalkeeper off-guard before she parried it over the bar.

"We have great confidence in our keeper, Kendyl [Baker]. She came up with some really big saves there to keep them out of the net," Phongsavath said. "A special shot is going to have to beat her."

Davis sealed the game after Weber's Trinity Kerr handled the ball in the box in the 77th minute and was whistled for a handball. Colohan cooly buried it from the penalty spot to give the Darts some breathing room, scoring her 23rd goal of the season in the process.

DiReda said she was "yelled at" last week for not aggressively going after a ball in the box for a header opportunity.

She learned from the experience and Davis found an unlikely hero to help the team survive and advance.

"I just saw it coming and I knew 'This is it, I have to put it in,'  " DiReda said. "Just putting it in was the best feeling in the world knowing it was this big of a game."
