BYU's softball team couldn't have asked for a better start to the 2017 season and freshman Rylee Jensen couldn't have asked for a better start to her career.

The Cougars routed the Big Ten's Nebraska 12-1 in five innings via the mercy rule at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge in Mexico on Thursday morning.

BYU then had to face No. 1 Oklahoma, and fell 7-1 to the Sooners, who had just lost 3-2 to No. 2 Auburn.

"We saw some really good things today against exceptional competition," BYU coach Gordon Eakin said. "We will take the good things and build and adjust on the things we need to work on. I like our team.

The early win came against the team that ended the Cougars' season last year, Nebraska, in an NCAA regional game.

McKenna Bull picked up the win, striking out seven and walking just one.

Jensen went 4-for-4 in her collegiate debut and scored three runs. She continued the hitting streak with a single against the Sooners to post the best season-opening hitting performance by a BYU freshman in school history.

BYU will face No. 13 Washington on Friday as the tournament continues in Mexico.
