4A boys' basketball: Springville senior banks in winning 3-pointer in OT to sink Woods Cross

Ogden • Springville guard Bennett Hullinger joked that he called "bank." Whether that's true is besides the point because Hullinger certainly called "game."

Hullinger twisted his body in midair just to release the shot cleanly and banked in a game-winning 3-pointer as time expired in overtime to stun top-seeded Woods Cross 51-50 in the Class 4A boys' basketball quarterfinals at Weber State University on Thursday afternoon.

"I let it fly and got lucky," Hullinger said. "It just feels unreal to me. I can't explain it."

Springville coach Justin Snell couldn't force himself to watch the play because of overwhelming nerves. He knew his program had emerged victorious once he heard the screams and felt the rush from the bench.

"I didn't see it," Snell said. "It's too inappropriate for a high school game to be decided on a bank shot because whoever ends on the wrong end, you feel awful for. I'm grateful that we're on the right end. It was a little luck, and thankfully it went in."

The Red Devils (19-5) wanted to slow the pace against the high-powered Wildcats (22-3), who were undefeated in Region 5.

They more than accomplished that.

Although Cal commit Trevin Knell finished with a game-high 28 points, no other Wildcat managed to reach double figures.

Andrew Slack, a Weber State football commit, led the Red Devils with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Josh Elison chipped in 14 points.

The game was matched evenly throughout, with Springville enjoying the largest lead of eight points with 5:58 remaining in the fourth quarter. Woods Cross led by five points in the first quarter.

Springville won the battle of second-chance points, 14-6, after grabbing 18 offensive rebounds.

"It's really based off of our offense," Snell said about the rebounding. "If we've got great movement, we know when guys are going to shoot the ball, which [means] we can leave to go crash. We offensive rebound 40 percent of our missed shots on the season as a whole."

The Red Devils will face the winner of Highland and Hillcrest at 5:50 p.m. Friday at Weber State.

"I called bank," Hullinger said.

And he's sticking to it.
