Jake Heaps: No mission plans at current time

The Cougars just wrapped up a short, intense practice in the indoor practice facility on the West side of campus. The only player who was held out was fullback Zed Mendenhall, who suffered a concussion against Washington. He must clear protocol in order to play this week against Air Force, trainer Kevin Morris said. Tight end Devin Mahina (ankle) was actually cleared to play against UW, but didn't, so he is obviously good to go this week. Speaking of which, coach Bronco Mendenhall said he still isn't naming a starting tight end (although Mike Muehlmann started there against UW). Mendenhall said Muehlmann, Richard Wilson, Mahina, Austin Holt and Marcus Mathews will all have roles on the team this year, and that he may never list just one starter. —————————— Today marked the media's first chance to talk to quarterback Jake Heaps in a one-on-one setting. Heaps did appear at the postgame news conference, but that was before a sea of cameras, reporters, etc.Anyway, I asked Heaps the question that is on the minds of BYU fans everywhere. Is he going on an LDS Church mission after the season? "As of right now I am not going on a mission. At any point, it could hit me, saying, 'hey, I need to go on a mission.' But I am pretty sure that I will be staying here and playing football," he said. —————————— Most of the questions for Mendenhall Monday were about the challenge of playing Air Force this early in the season. He said it was definitely going to be difficult, "no question about it," and said it would take every minute of every practice this week to get ready for the Falcons and their unique offensive attack. He also hinted that he would love to continue playing Air Force when BYU goes independent. "I love everything about the Academy," he said.
