Jazz media day notes — Kirilenko, Williams, Okur, Hayward and more

Twitter notes from the Utah Jazz's annual media day Monday at the team's practice facility.

Twitter: tribjazzKevin O'Connor said the Jazz plan to have Andrei Kirilenko in uniform when the season starts, but he can never make guarantees. O'Connor spoke with Kirilenko this morning to clear the air. O'Connor said the team wants AK, but has a policy of always listening to offers. O'Connor made it very clear that the team listened to the proposed Kirilenko trade, but did not initiate it.O'Connor said that trade discussions "got ahead of themselves," and that other teams were driving the talk. O'Connor on proposed Kirilenko-Boris Diaw-Carmelo Anthony trade: "If you're going to make that trade, it would've been done Friday."Deron Williams on Kirilenko: "He's still on the team."Williams' overall mood and take on the Jazz was realistic and grounded. He was neither down nor up. A see-what-we-can-do mindset. Williams said he is pleased with where team is at and the moves the organization has made. O'Connor said he is expecting big things from C.J. Miles. Wants Miles to play like he did during the playoffs last season. Mehmet Okur acknowledged that the last few months have been hard for him. He said he normally never wants to take a single day off. Okur will still be re-evaluated in mid-October, O'Connor said. But everything from running to agility drills are a question mark. Okur said he is 70 percent healthy; has no personal timetable for his return. O'Connor again was hesitant to put a timeframe on Okur's return. Many players seemed to think it was down the road. Williams: "We don't know when Memo is going to be back." Williams, Paul Millsap and Al Jefferson are locked in at the 1, 4 and 5 for Jazz. Camp battles for 2, 3. Bell appears to have early nod at 2. Bell/Miles will compete at 2; Kirilenko/ Gordon Hayward at 3, coach Jerry Sloan said. O'Connor joked that the one person who improved the most during the offseason was Sloan. Hilarious exchange about Sloan not running the same plays this year. "I hope he can catch up with the rest of the league," O'Connor said.Hayward acknowledged being "nervous" for his first media day. He was in a good mood, though. Talked about video games, Indianapolis Colts.O'Connor said Kyrylo Fesenko, Earl Watson, Bell and Kirilenko were in excellent shape. Jazz will likely place 1-2 players on their Development League team. Sixteen-player roster likely cut down to 13-14 by start of regular season.Fesenko said he is down to 285 pounds; O'Connor estimated Fesenko had lost 20-25 pounds. Fesenko said his contract situation was hard, especially in September. But he said everything was fine between him and the Jazz. Kirilenko surprised Bell with a huge bear hug and big smile. Both seemed happy to be back together. Watson: "This is the best team I've been on."Sloan said he could change his mind any day, but he's fully devoted to coaching the Jazz right now. — Brian T.
